What book do you feel has more hype then it should?

Just curious as to what your thoughts are on some of the books that have been hyped up but maybe once read has fallen short in your mind.

The da Vinci Code.
Just a so-so detective story. It made Dan Brown wealthy because of a controversial theme.

The producers of the movie would like to thank the Roman Catholic Church and Evangelical Protestantism for all the free publicity. The book was so-so, the movie was just plain boring.

Although I've been known to defend the Twilight books because: 1) it actually get's people to read and 2) I have no 2....

The series is overrated and while many enjoy the "light read" they're not very good. They're poorly written and meaningless. But I digress.

I second the Dan Brown nonsense. The DaVinci Code was way too hyped up and not a great book.

Catcher in the Rye (J.D. Salinger)
anything by Jane Austen
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Stephen Chbosky)
Beowulf (not really a book, but still literature)
The Canterbury Tales (Chaucer)
many, many more...

I love Beowulf. It's just so great.

I'm going with Twilight on this one. And The Lovely Bones.

I hated 'The Bridges of Madison County' Everyone said what a great book it was, and I couldn't get past page 20.

The Lovely Bones? Agreed. I wasn't "feeling it."

I feel like I'm going to get smote for this one... Anything by J.R.R. Tolkien. I fell asleep during The Hobbit as well as The Lord of the Rings. Also Wuthering Heights. Maybe I'm not old enough to appreciate them?

I totally agree with you. I tried to read The Hobbit as a kid and failed miserably, so I let the cartoon suffice for my knowledge of the story. After the blockbuster films came out, I tried to read The Fellowship of the Rings, and couldn't get past page 2. The language was too stiff and I was already bored. I love the movies, though, but have to be in the mood or have literally nothing else to watch or do. Blasphemy to some, same old to others. One man's filth is another man's treasure, as you of course understand by loving Catcher in the Rye when I absolutely hate it.

Genocide and Bleach.... heretics, you need to be burned at the stake. I hated Wuthering Heights too. Catcher in the Rye was a major book when I was younger, it described many emotions that I felt at the time.
