This story could have been a lot better had it been only about one character. Gogol really developed the first character and should have stuck with him. It would have made a better ending. I know I've been guilty of imagining the best of a pretty girl and then been hit with cold reality. Then you see that smile again and you give it another chance, only to find there's nothing going on upstairs - and it's truly depressing.

Who raises these princesses? Why don't they take more care in how they're raised?

I can see how attractiveness would limit the need to develop a personality or intelligence when everyone caters to your every want. No one lets you do things for yourself or expects you to and there is always someone new who hasn't fallen or will fall again for the same bait. Why make the effort? Why do lottery winners quit their jobs?
