I am writing a science-fiction trilogy about the discover, exploration and colonization of an extra-solar planet. Does anyone know of a publishing house that might be friendly to a first-time sci-fi author? No vanity presses, please.

My first s/f novel was published in 2006 by http://www.samsdotpublishing.com. They don't pay advances and they don't do much promotion, but I highly recommend them as a reputable, easy-to-get-along with outfit. There are several other indie publishers for s/f, try googling and go to http://www.ralan.com for list of publishers, magazines, writing tips, etc.

I suggest you have a look at feedaread (http://www.feedaread.com) which focuses on independent authors. You have to produce the input yourself (as a pdf) but you then only have to pay a price per copy rather than any set up costs. I'm currently using them for my daughter's novel - I haven't got to the stage of receiving a printed paperback to check but reviews from others have been good. You can also pay a one-off fee (£78 in the UK) for them to make the book available via amazon and others rather than just through their website.

You can do the same thing for print novels through Amazon's Createspace and it is automatically on Amazon's website and you can also add Kindle. I've published several books that way and am completely satisfied with their services. Now if I could only figure out how to get people to buy copies.
