KDP SELECT versus SMASHWORDS etcetera, WHICH IS BETTER?

KDP Select requires its author-members to give them exclusive sales rights, whilst Smashwords lets you use Kindle
Smashwords claims to reach a wider span of readers worldwide, but is that true?
Formatting and the publishing process are easy with KDP, but are a minefield with Smashwords. and I shall need a lot of paid help to get through the process.
Does anyone have strong views on which on-line publishers are the best options for an author wanting to publish on-line?
