To celebrate four years of publication of Scots News Magazine, my three family history novels will be reduced to $2.99 each (usually $6) for the month of May. Anyone who has Scottish ancestry is likely to have agricultural labourers or coal miners in their family and these books will give you an insight into the lives of your relatives. Faeries, Farms and Folk begins the trilogy in the mid-1600s when belief in witchcraft and faeries was commonplace and people who were believed to have ‘the gift’ – the ability to see into the future – were feared and ostracised. They lived in a time of political unrest and religious fervour, fuelled by the belief of many that witches, ghosts and goblins played a part in their fortunes or misfortunes.
The second book Ours, Yours and Mines outlines the lives of families who lived in miners' rows and how disease, particularly tuberculosis, was spread in the two-room houses in which they were forced to live in the 1800s. Far Across The Sea follows a young man to France to fight in WWI and eventually sees his son leave post-WWII Scotland for new adventures in sunny Australia. The books are based on real people, places and events in the author's family history.
