I have recently read this book. It is languishing in the YA section of the library, and it must be rescued from security. The setting is 19th Century. The characters are a boy thief, a sacred white tiger, and a beautiful maiden who has been sold by her father to a rich and dissipated merchant. It is a story within a story that crosses into legend.
