I'm literally keeping my cable subscription just to see this next hearing. After that I'm cutting the cord to save the money. They've done such a thorough and convincing job with their investigations.

Last night's hearing was more damning evidence against Trump, as if we need more evidence at this point. One of the best moments was of Sen. Josh Hawley in that now infamous pumping of fist in solidarity with the insurrectionists outside the U.S. Capital building. And then a couple of hours later, we see the Senator running from the very crowd he helped to rile up. Run, Hawley, run!!

Maybe we will yet recover from the disaster of the Trump years, and if we do, much credit should go to the House committee. Is there an award the whole body can be accorded?

Even if prosecution of Trump is a bridge too far for DOJ, it's looking more likely that the pounding he's taking will sink him as the party's prospective nominee. Even for that more limited service, the House committee deserves our gratitude.

But my money is on Garland indicting Trump. The obstruction of Congress charge should succeed so easily with a jury that Garland would be negligent not to charge. Maybe he'll also charge the harder to prove seditious conspiracy.

Both the WSJ and New York Post recently editorialized against Trump in fairly blunt terms. Politico is suggesting that Rupert Murdoch, owner of these papers, is "done" with Trump. (Politico describes the editors as “slow learners”). Even FoxNews, also owned by the Murdoch family, seems to have moved past Trump.

https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/ ... e-00047748

All this because the Jan. 6 Committee has presented enough evidence, pushing us past a point that makes supporting Trump indefensible. That's the good news.

The bad news, I guess, is that there are still many Republicans who put their party over Democracy. Rupert Murdoch will probably just switch allegiance to some new political person, probably Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Perhaps Trump has always been just a symptom of a larger problem. We shall see.

This hearing seemed repetitive, mostly summarizing what had been said in prior hearings. However I was rewarded for watching until the end. Here are a few points of interest.
  • Many people claim the committee was highly partisan, but almost all of the evidence came from Republican sources including Trump appointees, staff, and even family members.
  • Much of the efforts to block some of Trump's most extreme efforts also came from Republicans including Trump appointees, staff, and even family members.
  • One of the blocked efforts included immediate withdrawals of all troops from Somalia and Afghanistan in mid-January 2021. This was a tacit admission that Trump knew he had lost and would have created foreign policy chaos for the incoming administration.
  • Another blocked mission was to seize voting machines, impose martial law, and run an alternate election.
  • Trump also attempted to stop all vote counting on the night of the election when he was ahead, knowing additional votes from mail in ballots would trend towards Biden.
  • There was video of Congressional leaders calling out during the insurrection seeking help from the military, national guard, and local police units. These were activities that Trump refused to do.
The reward mentioned above is the committee adopted a resolution to subpoena Donald John Trump for testimony.

These are the two items I'm most interested in. It was nice to see Nancy Pelosi on the phone calling for help because most Republicans I've talked to made it out that she didn't do anything at all to help the situation. We now know this just isn't true. She was calm, cool and collected throughout the ordeal. She really impressed me. Trump is the only one who sat idly by and allowed/wanted the insurrection to continue. But there are some more questions about this that I don't feel have been properly addressed. If it is true that the Secret Service knew there was a strong possibility of violence why weren't there more security forces present on January 6th? We looked so weak to the rest of the world (China and Russia) as they saw firsthand and live how easy it is to overrun our government. Who should have beefed up security ahead of the event? Why didn't they?

So Donald Trump MUST sit for questioning if he is subpoenaed but he can plead the 5th and not answer a damn question right?

One important reason for the lack of security and the difficulty of obtaining additional protection on that day is actions taken by the Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller. (Briefly acting: 11/9/20 - 1/20/21) Two days before the insurrection, he issued a memo enacting unprecedented restrictions on the use of the District of Columbia National Guard (DCNG) "without my subsequent personal authorization." Seriously, read this damn thing - it's a total lockdown. The DCNG was not even allowed to gather data or assess the situation - let alone take any action - without permission from the SecDef. That lack of response was engineered ahead of time. They knew what was coming...

There were also huge problems with the Secret Service, will check that later...
