Okay...five great books....I won't be presumptuous enough to believe I can name the five indisputable greatest, but here are five great ones in my opinion:

1. Pride and Prejudice--Austen
2. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn--Twain
3. My Antonia--Cather
4. To Kill a Mockingbird--Lee
5. Persuasion---Austen

My top five, which are always in flux are as follows:

1. Farewell to Arms--Hemingway(you could really put any of his novels here, except To Have or Have Not)
2. Gullivers Travels--Swift (I love the satire of Jonathan Swift)
3. 1984--Orwell
4. Red Badge of Courage--Crane (Simply because it is one of the first great American war novels.)
5. Howards End--Forster

"Tales of the Genji" by Murasaki Shikibu.

Hmmm...nice topic. I can't really decide which are my persoval 5 faves in order, so I'll just enumerate them like this:

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub, Instruments of Night by Thomas Cook, To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, and Journey to the West (Monkey King).

I'm not so sure though, I might've forgotten something. I have so many favorites it's so hard to choose!

This is so hard! When someone asks me what my favorite book is, I pause. Eventually, that person will ask me if I heard them. I reply, "yes, I was waiting for you to finish asking the question", meaning, favorite book on what topic!

Thanks! And you're right. It's kind of frustrating, but at the same time, interesting when people ask what your favorite books are! So many books, so many genres! :laugh2:
