But now...
Nearly 1 million American deaths - almost equal to the deaths in WWII plus 9 times the Vietnam war - are dismissed as a hoax.
Minimizing that devastation is anti-patriotism that disparages the sacrifice of veterans.
Americans deeply confused about freedom claim it as a right to spread a disease as we once claimed it to own humans.
Thanks for this post. Though in truth my own disenchantment happened when Trump took office.

Basically, what the hell has happened to our country? It seems we have collectively gone down a rabbit hole.

The latest weirdness is the Canadian truckers' protest. These guys really don't want the government telling them to get a vaccine shot. Understandable to some degree.

Thinking more about the resistance to vaccines. I've probably mentioned Jonathan Haidt's Moral foundations theory, which explains a lot of the differences between conservatives and liberals. Conservatives, particularly, are preoccupied with notions of purity and disgust. I can imagine the idea of someone putting a needle into their arm would trigger this sense of violation and disgust. Perhaps this isn't very helpful, but I do think there may be something to it!

And this is an article I mentioned last year that talks about why conservatives are more likely to dismiss the dangers of coronavirus. In short, conservatives tend to feel more threatened by enemies with agency. For example, communism and socialism would be perceived as a real threat because they are engineered by foreigners with hostile intentions towards the United States. Whereas, a virus doesn't have agency; it just spreads indiscriminately from human to human. Maybe that's why too, that some conservatives want to call it the China Virus because that does give the virus some agency—or at least someone to blame.

My thoughts on a Saturday night . . . I think it's possible I have Covid. I've been feeling really tired these last couple of days and I have some aches in my joints. I'm planning on getting tested in the morning. Cheers!

I continue to be amazed by the stories at the Sorry Anti Vaxxer site.

Here is my comment about a nurse who recently died of Covid.

I really don't get how a registered nurse can oppose vaccination for Covid in good conscience, and without deception. For a start there is the narcissistic selfishness involved, failing to see how vaccination is an act of compassion and human empathy to minimise the impact on hospitals and vulnerable people. These are core values for nursing. Next there is the basic arithmetic, seeing that vaccination prevents far more bad health incidents than it causes. This also points to relative risk assessment. Ability to understand scientific information is essential to modern nursing. As a professional, a nurse has some responsibility to model good health decisions and behavior, and not to promote kooky rubbish. This all makes me wonder how an opponent of vaccination can possibly have the professional competencies needed for their work in nursing, on top of the grave risks they pose to themselves and others that are the main basis for vaccine mandates.

Biological change over time can be predicted by experts from mere suggestion of past and existing examples. Viruses want to survive like any other living thing. Mutations are the dice roll of uncertainty. Covid wants to hang around, it’s in its interest to do so. That’s what I find fascinating. We are witnessing evolution in the moment. There are those who are pushing the lab leak conspiracy, there’s good reason for that. A lab leak means that covid was “created” just like Adam and Eve and the Earth and everything else. Young Earth Creationist bullshit... What do you think of that Booktalk people?.
Hi Taylor. There is another dimension of the lab leak theory, separate from the bullshit creationist basis you mention. There are scientific papers such as these https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/ful ... .202000240 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10. ... .202100189 and this commentary that shows how the discussion is politicised. https://knowablemagazine.org/article/so ... conspiracy My own view is that an accidental lab leak is the most likely origin, in view of the central role of the Wuhan Virology laboratory in bringing bat viruses hundreds of miles from caves in Wuhan to increase their virulence using gain of function genetic engineering. If this is indeed plausible, it suggests the virus may herald a whole new phase shift in planetary evolution, as the first dominant species that arose from artificial rather than natural selection. It is a Frankenstein bug.

Covid is here for the long run or it won’t. No person can say. It will take a god to authorize the fate of humanity and Covid 19. I think it’s inappropriate to claim to be “over” covid because there is no evidence to suggest that covid is over us, it may just be getting started.
It is dangerous to write off the lab leak theory just because of the Trumpites. Given how Delta and Omicron have emerged with severe effect, it would be foolish to assume that even worse variants are unlikely. I just suggest that people do everything they can to boost their immune system through diet and exercise, as this virus shows a strong likelihood of producing an enduring fall in life expectancy. And maintain vaccination and limit exposure to likely virus locations.

Covid is the tip of the iceberg of societal stupidity. Our combined medias broadcast ignorance and fear like Saharan dust broadcast around the globe. We are skin deep in dumb. There is no escape from this. Humanity is a Christ’s crucifixion past salvation. Think about it!. Humans concoct Christ the redeemer and humanity has been mostly a failure or fucked ever since. We’ve invented some marvelous trinkets since Christ’s time but really nothing new under the sun ever. We invented God to die or kill by Gods name. We replaced God with money only to die or kill in the concept of money. Covid is a metaphor for biological evolution, Each generation is living the halcyon days but for the bygone days, consider a sentient Covid, (it’s not) survival is its own purpose. Christians ask, with out god how do you have purpose? Fools that they are. Mere survival is primary, sympathy, empathy comes accordant. Omicron is accordant, The virus will die if it kills its host. It is evolving for its benefit, its survival, its purpose.
Viruses are not sentient. They adapt to the niches we provide. Evolution is exercising selective pressure against ignorance and stupidity, as shown at https://www.sorryantivaxxer.com/ .

Thanks Robert :) as always I enjoy your way of thinking and participation in any given conversation.

The link above is the foundation for my skepticism for the lab leak theory.

It shows that there is a low likelihood for the possibility of an unnatural origin for Covid 19 or SARS Cov2 that the genomes, the phylogeny suggests the likely probability SARS Cov2 is zoonotic.

I think that Bayesian probability as applicable to this topic is an important part of the discovery of covid origins. The gain of function reasoning seems to enhance the the lab leak claim. Plausibility is not Probability. Plausibility enhances the sinister nature of a closed society such as China. Weaponizing a virus certainly is something governments and militaries do but I am hard pressed to accept that aspect of the current situation. (I’m assuming a military component as... if it was gain of function what else then would be the function of a unnatural virus?). To blame the lab as a source leak would also indicate that the lab was a sloppy operation. If that is the case then probability would indicate sloppiness within the management of other laboratories operating around the world. Yet... only the Wuhan China lab? Doesn’t make a hole lot of sense.
To be fair I am not writing off the possibility of a lab leak, I’m just thinking about probability.

I’ve made no secret of the absolute disgust I have for former president shit for brains but it is not just his acolytes here in the U.S., There are the ScoMo’s of your country as well. Let’s not forget that Murdoch owned media’s infest people with rubbish information on a global scale. ( not trying to distract or straw man the conversation) Relying authoritatively on the science for me isn’t a path to follow but it does suggest guidelines that are mostly harmless, the virus is the source of harm. Where then is the source of the virus? My link suggested a strong probability of bats and raccoon dogs. This relationship is demonstrated phylogenetically.
Chris wondered whether I am exhausted from FPSfB an the pandemic, I’m not. In fact I have never been doing better than I am now. In part because of the challenges to my thinking people like you instill, party by the natural development of my own thinking, increasing economic stability, friends and family, plain good living, learning to do the right things and doing them.
Living life not just existing. Doing...not being done.
I can change my mind about the lab leak theory any time the probability is clearly demonstrated, I haven’t seen the probability yet.

Geo is one of my favorite people of whom I’ve never met :hmm: I wouldn’t wish Covid on you brother, take it seriously and I am wishing you the best for there’s little else I am able to do for you except prayer :-D , would you like that Geo? Me a devoted atheist to pray for you a fellow atheist? I’m honestly laughing to myself but get well soon man, don’t fear the reaper.
Time to get ready for the Big Game... Rams vs, Bengals... no mask, no distancing. my guidance... a four pack of tall boy beers, a pack of smokes and a hunger for chicken wings, potato salad, shrimp cocktails, and pizzapie with anchovies :coco: but I like it :P

I see it a little differently. That the origin of the virus is believed to have originated in Wuhan, and that there just happens to be a virus lab there (that studies coronaviruses) seems one coincidence too many. If this is the case, the virus may have been manipulated in the Wuhan lab and then, due to sloppy protocols, exposed to a couple of workers. I would hope that we continue to look for answers in this regard.

Wow, thanks, man. Instead of saying a prayer, how about partake in a ritual involving drinking a beer (either alcoholic or nonalcoholic)! I'll do the same!

Seriously, I hope it is Covid. Now seems an ideal time to get it. Omicron is much less likely to cause serious symptoms and it confers good natural immunity. Better than a booster shot! My test comes back in less than 48 hours.

God, I was 22 when the pandemic began, and I ONLY aged 2 years physically but I feel I'm 50 mentally.

Virologists insist Gain of Function research is essential to protect against viruses. I think the Covid example shows this is massively dangerous. Here is a good explanation from the article I linked:
In order to evaluate the emergence potential of novel Corona Viruses (CoVs), researchers have created a number of chimeric CoVs, consisting of bat CoV backbones, normally unable to infect human cells, whose spike proteins were replaced by those from CoVs compatible with human ACE2. These chimeras were meant to simulate recombination events that might occur in nature.[19, 20] Such gain-of-function experiments have raised a number of biosafety concerns and stirred controversy among researchers and the general public. One of the main arguments in favor of gain-of-function studies is the need to be prepared with an arsenal of drugs and vaccines for the next pandemic.[21] By contrast, one of the main arguments against them is that the next pandemic itself could be caused by those experiments, due to the risk of lab escape.[22, 23]
Here is a picture of a chimera, the mythological source of the chimeric label for gain of function viruses.

COVID Could Outlive Human Species, WHO Expert Says
World Health Organization (WHO) officials expect COVID-19 to continue to evolve, and that it could possibly be around long after human beings because viruses are "supremely adapted" to survive.

..."There will always be variants," Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director, WHO Health Emergencies Programme, said on Wednesday. "The microbes might be around for a lot longer than we are as a species. They're supremely adapted to survive and they will continue to do that."

Omicron is doing a better job of reaching herd immunity than vaccination.
