Re: I. The Greek World View
Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell taught me the definition of archetype and I can’t get my head around how Tarnas paints early Greek philosophy with the same brush. It kinda works as in I think I see his allegorical use but Form and Idea (with a capital F and I), I don’t know. It seems to me he is taki...

Re: Taras Bulba
I did not like this story as much as Gogol's other stories. I do not like that the main character is so attracted to starting wars. I read in the afterward, however, that this was kind of a story of cultural celebration kind of like the Illiad. I suppose you could compare it to the King Arthur stori...

Re: The Overcoat
I now have a vision of 19th century Russian Ghostbusters, in fur coats and hats with proton packs and a crazy tricked out hearse.

Re: The Overcoat
“We all come out from Gogol’s Overcoat” This is a good quote. I did not feel overly saddened by this story. I did not feel like Akaky was unhappy with his life and I do not feel like Gogol wrote it that way. At the end he moved away from who he was in joining the party that night. He was not a part...

Re: Questions for God.
It is important to look at the bible from the culture that it grew out of. 5000 to 2000 years ago some of those things made sense to people. We may find them wrong now but our culture is very different. Sometimes people are just wrong no matter what time or place it is. But all cultures have faults....

Johnson, you are taking the Bible more literally than a fundamentalist Christian.

Re: The Diary of a Madman
One thing I found especially intriguing about this short story was the idea that things are what they appear to be. We see this in the beginning of the story, when the madman says "Our director must be a very intelligent man. His whole study is lined with books" (p. 4). The madman clearly...
