Re: why god is often thought of as a male figure

god has a male form because guys have been in charge in our various cultures since the creation of god. History is written by the winners, in a sense. Men have monopolized all our institutionalized mechanisms for social control and have tried to keep women un-educated and compliant.
Very true.

Re: The morality of the Bible?

Wow, a lot has happened since I have been able to get back to this thread! I guess you pretty much agree that this content is not all that moral then? It's better left to that ancient time period of brutality and to promote it as moral today is very errant. There are definitely parts of the bible th...

Re: The morality of the Bible?

These verses are coming from Jesus speaking to the Jews before going into the crucifixion - before there was such a religion as Christianity established yet in the story line. In the story line of that particular gospel that may be true, but scholars now discuss what Jesus really said. We do not ne...

Re: Ch. 4 - The Cost of Social Norms

The problem is, if we're not involved, if all we do is vote and nothing else, we're really not the government. Re: The morality of the Bible?

Why not just say: "Love your family but do not become too attached to them because all things pass away. Love God above everything else that you love because the eternal God is the one thing that shall not pass away. If you wish to be my disciple, love God above all things." Because the g...

Re: Ch. 4 - The Cost of Social Norms

If I might say something about this juicy point you make. I don't know if it's so much that people chuck social responsibility as much as it's a feature of our system to give everyone permission to pursue their own economic happiness without worrying about any social consequences. Let me note here ...

Re: The morality of the Bible?

If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. This quote houses the idea that God comes above all things; nothing is more important than your devotion to God. The story of the ...
