Re: NEW Non-Fiction Book Selection Process - Please Participate!

there is a fiction book about the Salem Witch trials, called Calligraphy of the Witch. The historical research is excellent and the author's perspective is about slavery from the Mexican viewpoint. I forget the author's name. There is also the possibility that their rye grain was contaminated and wa...

Re: The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas

I re-read this story 30 years after I read it as a teenager and I cried and cried. Nevil Shute's novel, A Town Like Alice has some of this pathos.

Re: I am looking for the title of a book...

I tried plots in Novel List plus, but didn't find anything close. I tried painted green--last man on earth--hibernation. I saw lots of other interesting books that I hope I get to read in this incarnation.

Re: What are some of your favorite fantasy books?

The Shamer's Daughter by Danish author Lene Kaaberbol. It is yet another book written for children, but the children ARE the heroes and they accomplish amazing things and have to deal realistically with so many responsibilities because their mom works. I especially like that the dragons in this sto...

Re: Best fantasy/supernatural books?

There are so many authors out there writing for a younger and younger audience. I really enjoyed the wit of Vivian vandeVelde's Heir Apparent . And Garth Nix from Australia has an exquisite series starting with Sabriel . There is better storytelling in children's stories because they don't get bogge...

All those years being a reporter and in the navy, give his book a vividness and real...

Tiger Moon by Antonia Michaelis

I have recently read this book. It is languishing in the YA section of the library, and it must be rescued from security. The setting is 19th Century. The characters are a boy thief, a sacred white tiger, and a beautiful maiden who has been sold by her father to a rich and dissipated merchant. It is...

Re: Seen any good movies recently?

I have seen two wonderful films in the last week in the comfort of my home. The first film is called Arch of Triumph starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. It is based on a book written by Erich Maria von Remarque (sp?). I selected it from Netflix simply because the cover is a head shot of Ingri...
