Re: Good political books?

I've found a pdf of The Master and Margarita. When I finish the ebooks I'm reading now I'll start that one, after first going through the Booktalk thread dedicated to it. But that'll be a while. I read American Caesar some time ago. Mention of it here made me think of Shirer's The Rise and Fall of t...

Re: wordpress.com vs wordpress.org

Thanks Chris & LanDroid for the links. I looked at them, looked at some others, watched a couple of tutorial videos. But my wordpress.com blog was restored, so after chasing my tail I arrived at a moot point, as is often the outcome when I deal with officialdom. The exercise taught me that I sho...

wordpress.com vs wordpress.org

I've used wordpress.com for about three years now. Free, not hard to figure out. I just use it to post personal stuff, upload pics and pdfs to give them an URL, things like that. I don't allow comments (avoid the rancor), don't link to social media, etc. Bare bones almost to the marrow. But now I've...

Re: Where do you buy your books and what do you pay for them?

Sometimes I find bargains on craigslist. I'm going to pick up a bookcase full of Louis L'Amour books tomorrow. I was looking for bookcases and came across a huge set of L'Amour. I'll sell the books on eBay I suppose, but keep the bookcase. The whole thing will cost me $100. The books are selling for...

Re: Webster's Dictionary & a happy find

Since I can now leave my Webster's out for easy access, I stop at it occasionally to look for new words. Yesterday I found "metoposcopy." The Wikipedia definition: Metoposcopy is a form of divination in which the diviner predicts personality, character, and destiny, based on the pattern of...

Re: Creativity or plagiarism?

Moby Dick could be regarded as just another fish story, and pretty tame compared to some of the ones I've heard bloviated at family gatherings.

Webster's Dictionary & a happy find

I guess of all the books I've ever come across, my favorite would have to be Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary, Second Edition. I think it was first published in 1934 and revised into a Third Edition in 1961. The copy I have is gift inscribed 1948, but I'm not sure when it was printed. A bookbinder re...

Fortune Telling Mazes 2018

A title that I've self-published for the past two years. Order your copies now as stocking stuffers: https://mikesheedy.wordpress.com/2017/08/12/fortune-telling-mazes-2018/ The mazes were the first graphics work I did on the computer. Got enthused and made a bunch, then I didn't know how to market t...

Re: Where do you buy your books and what do you pay for them?

Sometimes on eBay I'll search for a "lot" of books. I picked up a dozen of the Robicheaux novels for next to nothing that way. After the holidays I'll sell a lot of novels by Stuart Kaminsky. It's a good way to pick up beat-up reading copies a bunch at a time.

Re: Where do you buy your books and what do you pay for them?

In Austin I used to go to the Book Exchange, in south Austin, on Stassney. According to the internet it's closed now. They had a card system where you'd drop a stack of books and they'd mark credits, then when you bought a book they'd charge you a nominal price. Like exchanging one book for another ...
