Re: Ch. 13 through 15 of Hillbilly Elegy

I'm especially happy that Vance came to the Lord, and married Usha. She took a big risk marrying him. It's crazy how those of us that came from dysfunctional families spend most of our adult life undoing damage from our childhood. It's amazing how just the right type of people show up at the perfect...

Re: Ch. 7 through 9 of Hillbilly Elegy

I struggle to understand the new push in some states to require that Medicaid recipients work or be in job training or volunteer jobs in order to continue to get medical treatment. This is not a cash program in the sense that someone can convert benefits to money; all it gets one is healthcare. The...

Re: Ch. 7 through 9 of Hillbilly Elegy

Chapter 9 was by far the best chapter, in my opinion. He summarized every stage of his life and commented on each. He ended up with how experiencing the most stability by living at his mamaw's house in high school resulted in happiness, and how that happiness positively affected his grades and his o...

Re: Ch. 4 through 6 of Hillbilly Elegy

I am really enjoying the author's smooth writing style and descriptions of his family as they relate to different events in his life. It brought back memories of my own childhood listening to my parents fighting after they put us kids to bed. Sometimes I would lay with my ear to the floor of my bedr...

Re: Ch. 1 through 3 of Hillbilly Elegy

I was completely engrossed reading about the author's family and what he loved about them. I grew up in northern Ohio, but don't remember meeting any hillbillies. I thought it was interesting how the author's grandparents still lived like they did back in the holler even when they lived in a nice mi...

Re: Boston's Holocaust Memorial - simply too much for me to handle

Thanks for sharing your pictures. I visited the Holocost Memorial many years ago and I remember it being just as powerful for me as it was for you. The first emotion was a sense of awe at the sheer multitude - millions - men, women, and children - were killed. That emotion was followed up with a dee...

I like the idea of choosing one or the other or both books concurrently. Both books at the same time would be too much for me at this point in time so will choose Hillbilly Elegy.

Wow . . . lots of good books suggested. I'm not into politics so would struggle through that type of book but will read whatever book is chosen and contribute to the discussion as best I can.
