Re: Pascal's Wager

Quote:You know, one of the funniest things I encounter with a certain breed of atheist is that they argue without religion, there would be less wars while at the same time, they argue that you do not need a god to act morally.Take away God, and you simply give everything else a promotion. There IS no...

Re: Pascal's Wager

Quote:Mr. P: I am a sheep, but I am at least happy.Well, cross-referencing this to the "Doin' the Humanist Rag" thread, from a secular humanist point of view, if theism makes that person genuinely happy, shouldn't you sanction it? Maybe even encourage it if doing so promotes their happines...

Re: Official Poll - 2nd Quarter '05 (Apr/May/Jun) Book Selec

Can I put three votes to "no preference"? I'd be happy to read and discuss any of these books. If you make yourself really small, you can externalize virtually everything. Daniel Dennett, 1984

Re: Splenda being sued for misleading ads...

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. It tastes really good, doesn't increase my serum glucose, and most of the talk about "natural" is bullshit anyway. If you make yourself really small, you can externalize virtually everything. Daniel Dennett, 1984

American Lie Fest

The opposition response to America's chief liar made me much more sympathetic to the Nader constituency from the last US election. Let's bog down in the details of Social Security... no doubt important... and play right along with the Goebels-style lie about troops "defending our country"....

From the article linked: >; I wonder which gays those would be? My boyfriend never even heard of Spongebob. If you make yourself really small, you can externalize virtually everything. Daniel Dennett, 1984

Harris/Armstrong/Hiatus

I'm about halfway through Armstrong and I'm going to take a break and read Harris, The End of Faith. One reason is that I'm reading Harris with the brights, who meet every month. The other is that the 27th version of "god shaped hole in the modern spirit" is going to make me barf. If you m...

Re: Question 7:The meaning of Life

Whether life has meaning or not is a question of fact, not opinion; that is, it either does, or else it doesn't. So an if/then... if we evolved then there is no meaning... is not really appropriate, because it address a different question: "If there is meaning, what, if anything, is the source ...

Re: Question 4: Have your views of Islam changed after readi

Jews spent much more time as best friends of Muslims than as enemies. No, the time of mutual benefit doesn't surprise me; what shocks me every day is how these two natural allies ramp up the rhetoric and hate every day. If you make yourself really small, you can externalize virtually everything. Dan...
