Multatuli - The prayer of the unknowing

At Dutch class, we briefly discussed this poem by Multatuli. I will translate it for you (as good as I can) and I hope to get a discussion started about this. It is a poem concerning atheism. HET GEBED VAN DEN ONWETENDE. [The prayer of the unknowing] Ik weet niet of we zyn geschapen met 'n doel, Of ...

Re: what is your favorite musical?

I loved Wicked. One I would definitely like to see is the Phantom of the Opera. Anyone seen it? Was it great?

Desiderius Erasmus - Praise of Folly

I've read it last year and although the main character is the goddess Folly, I think one could see it as a non-fiction book. It's definitely one of these books in-between I should say, but it is a terrific book!

Ah, now here's something I can reply to from a philosophical angle since I've had a test on it past Friday  So be prepared... According to my philosophy text book, there are three different theories when it comes to the search for truth. 1. The correspondence theory , which states that the tr...

I came to this particular topic because it was labelled 'The Diary of Anne Frank', and as I'm Dutch this is one particular subject that is very close to me. Almost every year I am taught something new about World War II. I have read the diary itself three times and last year I visited Camp Westerbor...

I had this enormous book filled with all kinds of fairy tales - my favourite was one about three Princesses with glass hearts, of which two died and the third happily married. Also, I was brought up with Jacques Vriens Meester Jaap (Schoolteacher Jaap) and all the verses and stories of Annie M.G. Sc...

I started reading Slaughterhouse-Five and by the time I was at page 80 I was so sick of the sentence 'So it goes' I had to put it down. Also, I am planning to give A Farewell To Arms another go soon, but when I read it at first the 'and' 'and' 'and' in one sentence was a bit too much for me...

tbarron: I know I'm going a bit off topic here, but it would be interesting to hear a little about your childhood in Indonesia, and what it was like living with your parents as missionaries. I have never known anyone who has had this experience. Your previous post shows such detail and memory, I tr...

Count me in for Alice in Wonderland, as I have obtained it recently. Don't know if I'll be able to get Faulkner in time.
Also, I'd like to suggest Crime and Punishment by Dostoeyevsky (whoa, how do you spell that in English?!) or Daniel Deronda by George Eliot.

Thanks, I'll definitely try it. I saw the Girl with a Pearl Earring (that is, the painting) at the Rijksmuseum earlier this year. Loved it.
