Re: Discussion of Bible - should we start a year-long project?

What would be the goals of the discussion? To present alternative viewpoints on interpretation? To put readings in a historical context? To compare the differences in Old and New Testaments?
How will you contain the discussion and be able to say, okay, time to move on?

Re: Exploration of mysticism and spirituality in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek

For a definition of 'morality', I look to the studies done by Kolberg. Our definition is related to our cognitive development.
Since Dillard wrote Pilgrim at age 27 her own definition may have changed by now.

Re: Do you have to be "unbalanced" to be a writer?

Hmrush, I think you have found the perfect balance. Am glad to hear your creativity stayed with you. It makes sense that your art is part of your you-ness. Poetess, I hope you do see a therapist and get past the understandable fear of losing some part of you. But, you would be able to concentrate AN...

On sevcond thought, Don't write on the highs. Think of your physical health.
There are medications out there to even out the highs and lows and then you can write without the grief of either

Re: Do you have to be "unbalanced" to be a writer?

I think Hemmingway was self-medicating. He was off-balanced like a lot of great writers. I see Vonnegut mentioned and he suffered terribly. Virginia Woolf, F.Scott Fitzgerald, Viv Eliot, and if my brain were working better I'd be remembering more. They all had mood swings. Louisa May Alcott said she...

Re: Getting the kids to read...

I used to go to the library and ask the child librarian for suggestions for my son. Then at bedtime we'd snuggle down and I let him pick two books that I would read aloud. The fact the books were right there and he had a choice seemed to spark his interest. I read to him every night and it was a won...

Re: Supernatural belief correlates with finger length ratio

Definitely weird. But, can't enviromental influence be a stronger indicator. Would be interesting to do this as a twin study; separated at birth into very different religious/non-religious households.

Re: Would you buy books online or from a physical bookstore???

Have bought books on-line when I'm looking for something out of print. Biblio.com has been helpful---they found one in India for me at a very inexpensive price. Go to major chain because it's close by and I can physically handle the books, flip through, stop read, flip through. Store also has chairs ...

Re: Pilgrim At Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard

Have been away and missed the quotes and comments on Dillard. Nice to read. One quote from Dillard in another of her books, haunts me. It's so economically viable and answers the question of why lottery winners go broke and why people marry within their own class: "Money is like water; it seeks...

Re: Anyone planning on watching Temple Grandin on HBO?

Suppose there was a Temple Grandin book put in every McDonalds and Wendys---kind of like the bible in every hotel room. Am being sarcastic. Have worked with Asperger children (not adults) and degree of empathy seems to have a correlation with how high functioning they are. Obviously she's focused, b...
