Re: I don't believe in anything.

Have not seen either movie. Then there is Isacc Asimov's explaination of paranormal, explicitly, 'ghosts'. He stated a warp in time would create an appearance of a person or thing from a previous period. Saying, in effect, time is not linear but can loop backward, create a skip, like in a record pla...

Re: I don't believe in anything.

Yes, Suzanne, I too see a holier-than-thou attitude among many who proclaim to be born again. It would seem more self satisfying for, say, a former addict to announce they had used their own inner resources, own consciousness to overcome their addiction. What a boost to self esteem that would be. Pe...

Re: The End Is Near: Is 2012 Truly the Day When the World Will End?

Re: I don't believe in anything.

Scientists have found a 'God gene' which seems to make some people believers in a higher deity from birth. Missed that one. Am fascinated, though, by people who say they are "born again". I was born with a pointy head and it took me a year to walk, wouldn't want to repeat that. That said, ...

Nigeria

Couple of years ago, "Atlantic Monthly" cautioned that Nigeria was a hot bed for Al Queda activity due to it's depressed economy. The bomber on the Amsterdam-Detroit flight was from Nigeria and surprisingly his father is a banker. Why would a young man who is not suffering from poverty do ...

Re: Openmindedness

Will have to catch up and read Burton. So, are you all basically saying that openmindedness equates with one's reasoning ability? What dynamics alter reasoning? Millions once believed the earth was flat and that a king could stop the ocean waves. Does that leave the scientific method as our best bet...

Re: Openmindedness

First, I think there needs to be an operational definition of "openmindedness" before the question can be addressed. If you are looking at an infinity model then, no, because our brains are limited. Think if we would not be able to extinguish nonessential information then we'd have that mo...

Re: Something I didn't know

DWii & Geo---please keep your conversation going on this topic as I'm having to rethink some concepts, especially the fact of Jefferson ,et al ,being caught in his time. That probably seems elementary to you both but it made me stop and say "Duh" to myself. Do either of you teach philo...
