Re: Three Cups of Tea

How DARE you impugn his integrity!

Just kidding. It would be hard to verify some of that stuff. Mortenson didn't even write the book. It was written by David Oliver Relin who interviewed Mortenson and had to put all the fragments into a coherent narrative.

Dark Summit: The True Story of Mt. Everest's Most Controversial Season

In spring 1996, over ten climbers died in a storm while climbing Mt. Everest, including the accomplished leaders of two commercial expeditions, Rob Hall and Scott Fischer. The story of that terrible season was told, not without controversy, by Jon Krakauer in his best-selling book Into Thin Air . In...

Three Cups of Tea

In 1993, Greg Mortenson came close to reaching the highest point on K2, but opted instead to take the moral high ground, participating in a harrowing, life-threatening rescue of a fellow climber that dashed his own chances of summitting. Unbeknownst to Mortenson, this selfless event would serve as a...

Re: K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain

But I wondered if you . . . have a perspective on Krakauer's reporting in Into Thin Air . I read Into Thin Air twice, and had no problems with his telling of the events. A certain amount of confusion and forgetting is to be expected in such harrowing circumstances. Incidentally, David Roberts was J...

Re: Good reads about China

I just read (actually listened to) China Inc. by Ted Fishman. It was well-written, informative, eye-opening, and a little troubling for someone ensconced in the comforts of American suburbia.

K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain

This book is the second collaborative work by Ed Viesturs and David Roberts. Viesturs was the first American to summit all fourteen 8,000 meter peaks (and he did them all without supplemental oxygen) and Roberts is a prolific author of mountaineering literature, in addition to being the author of se...

Re: John Muir books ?

Can someone recommend me 2 or 3 good books that he (Muir) wrote? I have read loads of mountaineering-related literature, and John Muir is one of my least favorite authors. I feel like I just committed a sacrilege. Perhaps you should just head over to the library and read whatever they have. If you ...

Looks like it could be an interesting read. I'll be curious to see how he funded his adventures.
