Re: Steppenwolf

I have just finished the book. My initial impression is that it is a work of brilliance. I actually found it to be spiritually uplifting. There is so much to think about here, so many ideas both Eastern and Western are explored. Though sometimes presented a little awkwardly and heavy handed, these c...

Re: A voice for reason

I wholeheartedly agree. I have read every mainstream book that Sagan wrote and have watched the Cosmos several times. His ideas and presentation did very much lead one to a sense of awe at the wonders of nature and the universe. I would also add that many of his writings contained insightful philoso...

Re: Sci/fi book that deals with black holes

You may want to give David Brin's "Earth" a try. Though it has been a long time since I read this, I remember that the story-line involved the consequences of a small black hole falling into the center of the Earth. While this is a work of science fiction, Brin tends to use real science an...

Re: Thus Spake Zarathustra

I have such mixed feelings about this work. I agree with some of the previous posts that Nietzsche can be at times simplistic and even infuriating. As previously pointed out by others, his sexism is difficult to get by. I also find that 'Thus Spake.." at times exudes an intolerance for other id...

Steppenwolf

I just started reading Hermann Hesse's Steppenwolf.

I have previously read Siddhartha and Journey to the East. I have found both of these works to be spiritually uplifting and they are among my favorite novels.

I have really high hopes for this one.

Re: The Epic of Gilgamesh

Something that struck me as I read this work, is its' meditations on coming to grips with death. This is one of the oldest works known to humanity. It was written in such a different time. Yet, the realities and mysterious concerning the end of life that Gilgamesh wrestles with seem absolutely relev...

Re: 1984

Camacho, if you like this book, I have a feeling you might also enjoy The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. It's more intimate and revolves more around religious control and the oppression of women and their reproductive organs, but it is also an example of a world in which freedom and thinking o...

Re: 1984

I have read this book twice in my life. I will likely never read it again as I find it too troubling. I will not give anything away since not everyone has read this book. Many people talk about how the room 101 part is disturbing as are the he last few words of this book. Those passages are troublin...

Re: The Pale Blue Dot.

I really admire the late Carl Sagan's ideas and philosophies. While a he was rational thinker, he masterfully expressed the wonder and profundity of science and the natural world. In addition to a scientist he was a philosopher who explored humankind's place in an astounding universe. I think that I...

Re: Devout Christianity! Living the Myth!

Star Burst: Jesus was a fake! Just like the religion named after him...stop the pity party for Christians. It is necessary to attempt to reason with people when they hold unreasonable beliefs, otherwise they are inclined to feel righteous in blowing the rest of us to bits. I don't believe in being ...
