Re: Benefits of following Jesus

Though I am not a follower of Jesus, I think if one truly followed the philosophy espoused in the Gospels, one would need to give up most, if not all material possessions up to the poor, and oddly enough reap some benefits from doinf so. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, th...

Song Of Myself

I just snuck in a reading of Walt Whitman's Song of Myself between some projects that I am involved in. I have read this several times before. While I cannot say that I get everything that Whitman was trying to convey here, this work is SO astounding. This work is such an all encompassing,(mostly) p...

Re: Badmouthing religion is a crime

Stories like this make my blood boil. While I am a huge advocate of not insulting the ideas and beliefs of others, and pointing out offensive speech for what it is, the last thing that a free society needs are laws or government sanctions against opinions. What often disturbs me is that when I talk ...

Re: What are some of your favourite Science Fiction books?

<r>I started making me list and it is getting too long. So I cut it down as much as I can bear. <E></E> I know that it is still a bit too long for a favorites list. Of course, I am also sure that I forgot one or two that belong here..<br/> <br/> I am a little old schools as I have not read much...

Re: Have you read the entire Bible?

Yes, most of it at least twice. However I am not a Christian. I guess that I am agnostic. I do think that there is probably no God. But, one never knows. There is so much of interest in reading religious texts weather one believes or not, not just the Bible, but the Koran, the Hindu Epics, Buddhist...

Re: Have you read the entire Bible?

Enporer said: Just in the Bible I see much true wisdom, plus other things that are insightful and thought provoking, as well as ideas and opinions that seem abominable. There is also so much that has influenced, art, culture, history, and human ideas in general. There are surprises too. Perhaps eve...

Re: Greek History

Earlier this year I read Persian Fire by Tom Holland. A very engrossing read. It is amazing when one contemplates how Western Civilization may have been so radically different if a few battles during the Persian War had gone just a little differently.

A Great Improvisation

Reading this very interesting book by Stacy Schiff about Ben Franklin's diplomatic mission to France during the American Revolutionary War. I have always been interested in Revolutionary America. I recently read Citizens: A Chronicle of the French Revolution by Simon Schama and now I am fascinated b...
