Re: SuPer Duper Late!
Oh good! I read the first few chapters last night. I just finished reading The Odyssey, and from reading the introduction it seems like there will be some similarities. Nah, you're not late. There's lots of time. This book's been around for 400 years and it will be with us for another 400. I've bee...

Re: 1001 Books You Must Read
Hmm...interesting list. I went through it, and I've read 51 of the books. That's kinda sad 51/1001, but at the same time, there were so many books that did not make the list. Just off the top of my head: The Odyssey, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Angela's Ashes, The Pearl, The Diary of Anne Frank, anyth...

SuPer Duper Late!
I joined this site a few weeks ago and wanted to wait until the new fiction book was selected to join in reading. Unfortunately, I'm not interested in either of the books selected for June & July -- sooo, I said why not read DQ - I've always wanted to read it. So I'm going to attempt to read all...

Re: Seen any good movies recently?
I recently watched An Education with Carrie Mulligan. It was recently nominated for an Oscar, and it was solid acting and a pretty basic plot. It basically brought up the question of the value of an education (especially for women in the 1960s). The only part I didn't like was the ending. I won't sp...

Re: Possible second fiction book
I'm a newbie, and just wanted to give my two cents. I think that this thread started from the overwhelming majority of books from the same genre. It's not an attack on any culture, but there seemed to be a lack of variety in the choices. That being said, if the book I want, The Help, does not get vo...

Re: Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
After reading Robinson Crusoe, I suggest reading the play Pantomime by Derek Walcott. It's kind of a parody of the novel, and criticizes the relationship between Crusoe and Friday.

Re: Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
What version are you reading? I teach the unabridged version, and it can be a difficult read at times. As you get into the book, there are some great topics for discussion, especially when Crusoe meets Friday. It reveals attitudes of colonialism and how non-whites are treated as "the others.&qu...

Re: Possible second fiction book
I would like to read The Help, and I gave it my three votes. I'm not familiar with the Doris Lessing novel you mentioned, but I am familiar with the author. I agree that it seems that most of the books for the fiction vote are the same genre.

Re: Favorite character in literature?
I never really liked "The Yellow Wallpaper." It was always a requirement in American Literature and women's literature classes, and I just never saw what was so special about it. Not that I'm criticizing anyone else for liking it, I just personally never saw what was so great about it. To...
