Re: 2. Eleven Years Ago
<t>Is there something wrong with me, if I'm not finding the book funny? <br/> <br/> I might just not have the type of sense of humor you need for this book. I think I've smiled a couple of times, but I haven't laughed yet. I'm only about 30 pages in, though, so I'm just starting. But still, I figure...

Re: 2. Eleven Years Ago
Is anyone else out in the BookTalk world reading with us? Would anyone care to join us in our odd conversations about God's plan, demons and angels working together to thwart the apocalypse, and an aside into the music of Heaven and Hell? Anyone lurking should feel free to join us. We won't bite, a...

Re: A Proposition For My Absent Good Omens Readers
Yay! I don't care if we start back at the first chapter, I just want my discussion back! I can't discuss it with myself, that's just silly. Besides, I already did that the first time I read the book! Welcome, all, the more the merrier! This book is seriously too much fun to miss! :) Okay, goo...

Re: Thus Spake Zarathustra
Though apparently that one act of kindness put him in the asylum. I guess he wasn't a man meant for caring. :D ha, yeah, not the warmest guy. I heard he was weeping. I wonder if that's what When Nietzsche Wept , by Irving Yalom I think, is about? (I haven't read it.) I'm still thinking syphillis. T...

Re: Thus Spake Zarathustra
@Anderson : I've not heard that story. This is from that same wiki page: On January 3, 1889, Nietzsche suffered a mental collapse. Two policemen approached him after he caused a public disturbance in the streets of Turin. What actually happened remains unknown, but an often-repeated tale states tha...

Re: Thus Spake Zarathustra
Firstly I want to refute Anderson's complaint stating unequivocally that Nietzsche’s OverMan dominates popular perception of Nietzsche where it actually appears in only one of his books and is more of an image. Huh? I didn't complain, and I didn't even mention the Superman concept. I said, "Ni...

Re: Thus Spake Zarathustra
He got pneumonia and in his weakened state died of a stroke. Whether or not his madness was caused by syphilis cannot really be said. Labeling such a thing syphilis was common in his time, but some people challenge the diagnosis now. Syphilis may still be the culprit for his insanity, but it may no...

Re: Thus Spake Zarathustra
@Anderson: As I mentioned, they think the diagnosis of syphilis was incorrect. How did he die, then? He died at 54 (56?) in a mental institution, a cruel place. I think he had a bipolar illness (hypersexuality -> prostitutes) but he did die in the institution. Syphillis would kill you back then. Yo...
