Then I heard about the purity of competition, and how essential it is to safeguard against even the slightest chances of advantages. This strikes me as untrue. Athletes who are supported so they can train regularly, with top notch equipment, with all the best gear, have a great advantage over athle...

I just had a look at the site, and cannot find any information about who created it, who finances it, etc. I did a whois search, but couldn't get any information (it was my first attempt at using whois, so that could be the problem). Forgive me for being cynical, but I think it would be easy for a s...

Hi Sarah_squash, Welcome to BookTalk! Since joining this site, I have spent more time reading, just because of the sheer volume of great book suggestions. My 'to read' list just keeps growing. :) I read Nickel and Dimed last year, and found it very thought provoking. The situation is similar, but I ...

Hi Opelia, I've just check Vanity Fair on Amazon, and it looks very interesting. I've added it to my 'to read' list. One problem I seem to have acquired since joining Booktalk is that there are so many great recommendations, that my reading list is growing at a much faster rate than my reading. Jan.

There have been passionate discussions in France since 1991 about Muslim girls wearing the veil (or not) in our public schools (it's a long story). The wearing of a burqa was a hot topic in Canada a few months ago. A provincial election was being held, in an area where many traditional Muslims resi...

Hi Gulfstream, Welcome! This is a topic that I know nothing about. I did do a search to see if I could inter-library loan the book and then flip through it for you, but I cannot find any titles by Georg Eineder. However, this book is available: Author: Tschudin, W. F. Title: The ancient paper-mills ...

It may not be easy to find novels that are fun and also lend themselves to a discussion. I've recently re-read Thackeray's The Bonfire of the Vanities and enjoyed it immensely. Has anyone else read it? I think you mean Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe. I have read it, and reread it, and watched...

Hi Chris, Let me add: I apologise to America, and all democratic nations, for accepting the presidency when many in the nation and the world believe that the results were flawed. In a democratic country, the person with the most votes should be elected. France and Canada both refused to back America...
