The Lodger, Shakespeare:His Life On Silver Street

This book offers a fascinating look into everyday life in Shakespeare's London, specifically the few years Shakespeare lived as a lodger on Silver Street. The book is very well researched, and while Mr. Nicholl sometimes speculates on how events in Shakespeare's life may have affected his work, Mr. ...

Characters I want to read about/Making sense of it all ...

Well, I'm glad I'm not alone in disliking the movie. (From what I've heard I have no desire to read the book.) BTW, I also disliked "Pulp Fiction" and "Natural Born Killers." What ever happened to heroes who stand for something, who struggle against inner and outer conflicts and ...

No Country For Old Men: Our Culture

I just saw the movie No Country For Old Men . Frankly, I don't see how this movie got such great reviews. IMHO, it was just a series of brutal acts committed by a very sick individual. To me, the movie had nothing uplifting to say. (I don't want to give away the details of the ending.) What I find e...

Yes, the term literary fiction is hard to define. I should have been more specific. By literary fiction I mean fiction that is aimed for a small, intellectual/academic audience. Generally, these works are weak on plots. If you read fiction in the New Yorker magazine you know what I'm referring to. R...

Literary Fiction

This might ruffle some feathers, but I do not like so called literary fiction. I find most of it much ado about nothing, by that I mean I don't feel the authors have anything new to say, or even tell a good story. (I like intereting characters, but I also like interesting plots.) I feel that good fi...

Gone Baby Gone

I just saw this movie. IMHO, it had a fantastic screenplay with a great plot. I loved that at the end of the movie the main character had to made a tough choice. My only criticism was the over-the-top cursing that added nothing to the story.

Nikolai Gogol

I just saw the movie The Namsake . One of the characters favorite writer was Nikolai Gogol. The movie reminded me of how much I liked Gogol and how his stories influenced me, and helped me see that fiction could have a good story as well as something to say; and yet over the years I have forgotten a...
