The Namesake

I just saw the movie The Namesake. I really liked it though I thought it was a bit too long. One of the main characters favorite writers is Nikolai Gogol. I had forgotten how much I once liked Gogol. (It was certainly nice to see a character movie without violence and cursing.) The movie inspired me...

I struggle, and always remind myself that though I don't believe in a Judeo-Christian God, I believe in absolutes - morality. the laws of physics, etc. - and I believe in the wisdom of others - the techniques of casting a fly rod, of writing, or the great ideas like the twelve steps, etc.; and so I ...

The Fly Caster Who Tried to Make Peace with the World

What happens when we lose faith? Well to me The Fly Caster is about a lot more than fishing.

Yes, I read scientists who don't believe. The God concept is not black and white for me. I can say I don't believe in a Judeo/Christian God. How, I often wonder, could such a God have allowed the killing fields of World War One and Two? But I believe in absolutes - morality, ideals, yes, the techniq...

I don't know if this reply fits here, but as someone who struggles with believing in Intelligent Design, I often read the writings of scientists who believe in God - a God, for example, works his will through evolution. Two interesting books by scientists are, Finding Darwin's God by Kenneth R. Mill...

April 1865, The Month that Saved America, by Jay Winik.

This is one of the best history books I ever read. The book is rich with details and imagery that brings the action to life. Also, the characters are truly compelling.

In my opinion, "The Brothers" is one of the greatest books ever written, even though I found the first few hundred pages hard to get into. Dostoyevsky may have been a sloppy writer, but he was a writer who went through a lot in life and who therefore had something to say. I find that so ma...
