Re: 2012 Reading Accomplished

My goal for 2012 was 52 books (one per week on average) but I fell off in the Fall... for some reason I always seem to read less during Autumn. My final tally was just over 40.

My goal is the same this year, though my course load at university may have something to say about that.

Re: What are you currently reading?

I have just started Otherland by Tad Williams. It's interesting (I'm on page 223) though I wish I'd read it when I first heard about it a decade ago. A lot of the concepts introduced thus far have been explored in more depth in recent novels I've read, so I feel a bit like I'm moving backward in the...

Re: What does your BookTalk.org username mean?

A theomanic is someone who has theomania - the belief that they are god. I like this name for its irony. I have a way of stating things that seems to make people think I will brook no argument and that is the end of it. I also have a lot of Opinions. Yes, it deserves a capital "O". More th...

Re: What is the most disturbing book you've ever read

I agree with Flowers in the Attic. I read it when I was 13 or so and I was quite horrified and saddened by it. Besides the disturbing relationships, one of the things that really bothered me was the whole poison on the doughnuts thing. To realize the grandmother was almost as sad and trapped as the ...

Re: What made today bad

I've felt terribly ill all day, something that seems to come about more and more often lately. I sure would like a solid week of not feeling sick. The insomnia hasn't been fun either....

Re: What book of fiction should we discuss during February and March?

For what it's worth, I find the concept of The Man Who Was Thursday to be intriguing. The main book on my need-a-reason-to-read shelf is Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. I've heard so many good things about it, but I think I need a reading buddy (or ten) to get through it. From Amazon.ca: A ga...

Re: How to study literature without a university?

Personally, I am a bit leery of too much examination into literature because it seems that a lot of people project their thoughts and motives onto the writings of another individual. I forget his name, but there was some well known author whose books were heavily analyzed and determined to mean such...

Re: Has anyone else been deeply emotionally effected by a book? If so, help me get through this.

Haruki Murakami is excellent at the subtle and bittersweet. I also find his stories haunting, whether they're sad or not. His short story "The Kidney-Shaped Stone that Moved Every Day" was in my head for weeks, and still randomly occurs to me. I think that like grief, time heals such wound...

Re: What Made Today Good

I just finished Journey on the PS3 again. That game restores my faith in humanity.

And yes, I have noticed how much eye candy is in LotR. It's nice to be pandered to for once. :D
