Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity

This is not really in answer to your story, but it's from my own experience and addresses the point I raised about what should be (to my thinking) the keystone of a religion. I was for a number of years a member of a Christian Church. There were some good things about the experience. One part of th...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity

As far as these pre-conceived notions are concerned, the greatest problem I see with you (or anyone) believing in these suspensions of ordinary physics, is the partiality of such belief. If your notions allow for such events, they should expand to encompass all such claims by any party. But I'm fai...

Re: Did Jesus Exist - Bart Ehrman's new book

^The jury's still out on whether they even crucified Jesus in the first place. But according to the story line 'they' apparently did, though. John 10:30 "I and the father are one," is a metaphor for the mystery of mere existence. And that metaphor is the blasphemy charge that the crucifix...

Re: Did Jesus Exist - Bart Ehrman's new book

@ tat Actually, I washed the feet of some students awhile ago during a youth group. At first they laughed, but when they saw that I was seriously going to take my shirt off and wash their feet, they got very serious. One of them called me months after that night to tell me how much it had impacted h...

Re: Did Jesus Exist - Bart Ehrman's new book

In this one phrase "that can't be read as allegory" may be the crux of the matter. There is no clear limit to what can be read as allegory, in whatever it might be that we're reading. Matters of appropriateness, provenance, and literary genre assume a very important role here. The reason ...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity

Can you cite one of these credible critiques? Thanks. If the Bible is truly God's word, then matters of internal contradiction are major stumbling blocks. Many supposed contradictions are merely secular misunderstandings of what the Bible teaches, but some are not. There are answers to most of thes...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity

Doulos, the first part of your claim is a fairly simple one that comes down to whether we believe that such miracles and wonders can happen in the physical world. The second part is laden with Christian theology such that we can't even approach it if we don't accept its assumptions. Please note wha...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity

You haven't, I used emotional language, sorry. You're beating around the bush here Doulos. What are you trying to propose? What is it that you're hoping to contrast with 'logically valid evidence'? Of course not 'logically invalid evidence', because such evidence would be false or disconnected. Are...

Re: Did Jesus Exist - Bart Ehrman's new book

Aren't you letting the Book off the hook a little too easily? It's really more than misinterpretation by untold millions of people. Why would so many have "misinterpreted" the Gospels? Isn't it because they find license for their views right in the Gospels? I'm afraid I can't say with cer...
