Re: Did Jesus Exist - Bart Ehrman's new book
Hello Tat, A pleasure to meet you as well. I'm afraid my reply will have to be very brief, as I'm just preparing to run out of the house. My daughters have multiple birthday parties today. It is hard being the father of young socialites. 8) I think the historical reality of a Jewish rabbi and 'mirac...

Re: Did Jesus Exist - Bart Ehrman's new book
My point didn't have to do with correct historical facts. Whatever the facts were, they don't matter when we're looking at the effect of a book. If "Jews" was not a blanket term for a guilty party in the supposed historical context, it certainly became that within a relatively short time ...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity
This talk of formal logic is an unnecessary distraction. The bottom line is, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I don't care what kind of reasoning you use, everyone agrees with that or you would not be able to function in the world -- if someone tells you gravity just reversed it...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity
If during the course of your reasoning to support the bible, you commit a fallacy, would you ignore it? Logic doesn't apply everywhere, but it applies in many places, including attempts to support the bible. Not in all attempts, but in some. If you use reasoning that is known to lead to a false or ...

Re: Did Jesus Exist - Bart Ehrman's new book
This "Errorman" ordeal has worked out pretty good because it brought the existence of the argument to a much larger audience. The backlash from the book (much of it listed in my last post) has shown this newer, larger audience out there, the thin line historicists have to walk on. And of ...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity
@ Robert Tulip I would hope that I've informed as well as entertained. :) You do a nice summary of some of the tangible benefits of Christianity. While I would in large part agree with you, this does not take us away from the core issue. Are the claims of Christianity true? In part, I'm referring to...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity
Are you sure? Could the reason for the strong convictions not be that they are fabricated to gain further believers? Are you sure you're even reading the testimony of the supposed witnesses? If so, are you sure they weren't tampered with to increase believability in the story? Can a person not fake...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity
I'd think a lot of juries decide on a whim, without any logic, or even relying upon contradictions! Do you think the victim in such a trial is fairly judged? Would you agree with the jury even if they based their decision on a contradiction? This is an honest question. It is a very honest question,...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity
For understanding the story you're right. That's a necessary wisdom, I think, in studying the bible. What are you wanting us to focus on? I've been focusing on whether or not the story is true. I would like to know that at some point. I've studied the storyline when I was younger, and some recently...

Re: Prominent Scientists and their religiosity
Overly bound? If so, then only by necessity. But I'm not too much of a logistician. More of a philosopher in general. I enjoy informal logic more, or at least what I understand of it. Here is a link to informal fallacies that are fun to play around with. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fa ... ...
