Re: Ticked off!
Comments about issues with series echo mine. Have been to library shelves to browse and there is a book in a series, but others aren't available at that time. If I know it is a series, I put it back. The problem with reading the 4th or 5th in a series and then going back is then we already know what...

Re: Hello Book Lovers Everywhere!!!
Sal10e - I like Nora Roberts too, and her books as J. D. Robb as well. I am a big fan of James Lee Burke. I like your other ideas about James Rollins and Ace Atkins and will try them. Thanks for the suggestions. I really like variety as well and read a lot of different types of books. It just depend...

Re: Ticked off!
Cattleman - Yes, that is very annoying. Even more annoying is finding a book that sounds good and checking out, or buying it and then finding out somewhere in the back of the book, after reading it, that it is Part 2 or Part 3 of a four or six part series!!!! Of course you want to go back and read P...

Re: Book Acquisitions
It is the greatest walking through bookstores and just spending time. This is one of the things that I am enjoying, being retired. There is an independent bookstore in Seattle that used to be in a historic district, Pioneer Square. They were great there as they fit in wonderfully and were a great ad...

Re: November & December 2012 Fiction Book Selection
I am fairly new to this forum, but it seems from past selection that the group has discussed some very serious literature over the last few months. So it is good suggestion to move to something like fantasy.
I would vote for the Hobbit as I am not a big fan of the Hitchhiker's Guide.

Re: Part 1: Two Systems
Basing moral decisions on concensus sounds democratic, but could surely be lethal. Conscensus of opinion is very easily swayed by the manipulative use of language. NLP - Neurolinguisting Programming is frighteningly effective, especially used by a powerful and over-influencial media......but I'm su...

Re: Part 1: Two Systems
The question is which one is the "right" answer. Moral judgments are not like math decisions; there aren't clear right or wrong answers. Even moral philosophers disagree, so normative moral theories are frequently based on consensus. To use again the "murderer at the door" examp...

Re: Part 1: Two Systems
I am trying to make up my mind, whilst reading this book, whether fast thinking is inferior to slow, rational thinking. Or whether we need to feel encouraged to use both types. Do we really have a primeval, intuitive mechanism, which is addled from lack of use? Before I retired, I worked for manage...

Re: Part 1: Two Systems
I remember in college it was all introspection and discussion of topics relative to social and psycological experimentation. What this told us about ourselves. How religion was something we were fed as youngsters, but we were older and wiser now and did not subscribe to that pap. We were realists, f...

Re: Anna Karenina and "free thinkers"
Kevin, yes I did use the word "disrepect" inapproriately. He was a very respectful individual and yes I think he was more disappointed in his times than anything else. It comes out very clearly in his books and writings. This whole women riding deal throughout history. What a jumble. Times...
