Re: How to study literature without a university?
Maybe we should have a corner for former teachers. My own experience as an English teacher is slight, three years in grades 6-10 and a couple of years in college freshman English. I can't say the students drove me out, as there are other aspects about classroom teaching that are challenging and req...

Re: How to study literature without a university?
This was Bloom's somewhat curmudgeonly reaction in 2003 when Stephen King was given a National Book Award. I know Bloom considers Edgar Allan Poe a vastly overrated writer as well, so it's ironic when he says here that King is no Poe. I don't doubt what he says about the study of Lit being debased....

Re: How to study literature without a university?
Personally, I am a bit leery of too much examination into literature because it seems that a lot of people project their thoughts and motives onto the writings of another individual. I forget his name, but there was some well known author whose books were heavily analyzed and determined to mean suc...

Re: How to study literature without a university?
I always think of Emerson's dictum when it comes to reading criticism: Never read a book about a book. I certainly don't mean that I follow that (and I don't know that even Emerson himself really read only the primary sources), but I just like to fool around with perspectives on the matter. I suppo...

Re: How to study literature without a university?
I'm an English instructor and so, of course, I have an opinion on this. This is a great question by the way. A close reading of any work is so important and it sounds like you're already doing that. A close reading means simply to pay attention to details and ask yourself questions. What is ...

How to study literature without a university?
Now, the title is a bit misleading. I am currently a university student at college. But I am reading books we aren't covering in class. How do you analyze literature? What I usually do is read it once, summarize it and look for the themes And when I've gotten everything I can, I compare my findings ...

Re: Help with Iambic Pentameter?
The woods decay, the woods decay and fall. (Tennyson) Try reading this aloud. You can't help but place the emphasis on the even-numbered syllables (2,4,6,8,10). The WOODS deCAY, the WOODS deCAY and FALL. So in this line there are a total of 10 syllables and each pair of syllables is called a metric...

Re: Newbie, but hopefully not for long
Hi my name is Vic and I'm from Southern California. I love reading all kinds of books but lean towards mysteries. I also consider myself a closet author. I look forward to adding to the community! Hello Vic. It's nice to meet you. My name is Michael and I too love reading, but lean towards fantasy.
