Re: For an aspiring writer, how deep should book analysis go?

From your post, I think you're looking at this from the wrong angle. Analysis is not really supposed to be a chore and neither are the classics. Analysis is merely a way to make a story 'yours' so to say. Through analysis you can find meaning that might touch you. For example, John Donne poems are ...

Re: A mystery piece

This story reminds me of the time my friend Jimmy had a birthday party with a pinata. He put on a blindfold, grabbed the bat, and started swinging. Problem was, he was much too off target. We told him where to walk, where to swing, but he ignored us and, well, Susie ended up with bone fractures and ...

Writers who went overboard with research?

Re: How to do romance scenes?

His whole body trembled as he traced his tender fingertips across my forehead. This circular gesture which he repeated often in a passionate manner made my whole body moist with beads of sweat. It was like heaven, and it was the greatest thing I've ever felt in my life. Seconds seemed to feel like ...

Re: Best book on grammar/style??

I've actually read On Writing and it didn't feel like a guide on writing or grammar to be honest. It was more of a biography sprinkled with a tip here or there. But I will check out the Zinsser book.

I'm looking for something along the lines of a rules of style/grammar kind of thing.

Thanks!

Best book on grammar/style??

Hello. I've been shopping around recently for a good book on grammar/style I already own The Elements of Style, but I wanted something more...substantial... So what are your favorites? Especially on style, since I'm less concerned about precision and more about clarity, but precision is fine as well...

Re: Getting stuck

When it comes to motivation there are different methods. But what works for me the best is just doing it in bits and pieces (like you said).

15 minutes a day, then twenty, and so on.
