The demons could not be killed because they were devotees of Shiva. Vishnu becomes Buddha and Narada his disciple. The two deceive the demons with sweet words and destroy the chasity of their wives by gifting them jewels. Vishnu persuades them to give up worshipping Shiva and worship him as Buddha, giving the inducements of money,jewellery, clothing and women to entice the demons. Then leaving a part of himself behind as Buddha, Vishnu goes to Shiva who agrees to battle the demons because they have left his fold. "
