It is an older book, but if he has not read it "The Satanic Verses" by Salman Rushdie is probably one of the most controversial books of the eighties.

"Color of Lincoln" (as seen in http://www.coloroflincoln.com) is a 2009 book with over 120 Abraham Lincoln photographs in full color (normally only seen in black and white until now) , and addresses certain controversial issues such as President Lincoln's actual religious beliefs, the source of his wife's medical problems, his political use of photography - inspite of his dislike of having his photo taken, and a lot of interesting debatable trivia about Lincoln

"My Thinking Cap: Solutions for Global Crisis" is a book written by Brad Fregger in which he explains his philosophy on the future of our society, competition in an economic "cold war", immigrant policies, and lack of wisdom in key offices of our leaders. Brad recieved his Master's Degree in Futuristics and has very thorough and interesting takes on these very serious topics.

I too recommend The Satanic Verses. Not ENTIRELY non-fiction, but it's based on real things... And it's definitely controversial
