Have you ever been walking down the street and realized that you're going in the complete opposite direction of where you are supposed to be going? But instead of just turning a 180 and walking back in the direction from which you came, you have to first do something like check your watch or phone or make a grand arm gesture and mutter to yourself to ensure that no one in the surrounding area thinks you're crazy by randomly switching directions on the sidewalk.

I've done the nonchalant thing before, but other times I've done a military marching maneuver, or walked in a big 10 foot circle like I was doing a lap.

Just about anything absentminded, I've done. Of course, my most frequent is losing my car in the parking lot and having to pretend that I'm walking purposefully toward it as I scan the lot.

This reminds me of tripping over something, then having the need to turn around and address and examine the thing you tripped over. Nobody just gets up and starts walking again.

Have to say, this is funny. I'm loving the mental images you guys are providing.

I just did the parking lot thing yesterday! I went grocery shopping and forgot where I parked so I wandered back and forth feeling stupid. But I did it with authority so that people wouldn't know the extent of my forgetfulness.

Wow! I find myself guilty of all of the above.

Also, the trip on nothing, where you stumble then keep on walking like no one ever saw (or you hope no one did)!

and dont forget to stamp the guilty tripping obstacle flat so that no other civilian need suffer the same fate, or at least make a show of it.

I trip daily! Usually over uneven sidewalks, those are the worst. I noticed yesterday, this being the most frequent of awkward moments for me, when im walking and I see someone coming at me, I try to pick a side to stick to, yet somehow we end up doing that whole tango/box step thing. I can't help but laugh every single time.

I laugh too when I'm approaching someone and we seem to pick the same side. But I even laugh when I trip or stumble myself. Even when nobody is around to watch it. My wife is the worst of all as she cracks up when other people trip. It's one of her favorite things to watch. She's twisted.
