Hello from a NZ'er in Australia: My favourite novels ...

Unread post

Hi there, I'm new to the forum. A New Zealander living in Australia, I don't know many people here and I'm looking forward to having others to discuss my books with!

My favourite novels are
Anna Karenina, (Tolstoy)
Germinal, (Zola)
Roots, (Alex Haley)
The Odyssey, (Homer)
and American Wife, by Curtis Sittenfeld

ATM I'm reading a biography of Laura Bush by Ronald Kessler, I became fascinated with her remarkable life after finishing American Wife. I've been reading classics non stop for years and I've just started delving into contemporary fiction, finally! I never realised how much good stuff was out there.

About to start The Time traveller's Wife, The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing, Old School by Tobias Wolff, Drinking Coffee Elsewhere by ZZ Packer and Fear of Flying by Erica Jong

Really want to read The Brothers Karamazov soon. And Megan Daum's stories, Drown by Junot Diaz, The Age of Innocence,
Servants of the Map ...... oh and many more. IM's welcome!

Hello and Welcome!

I noticed that your favorite book is "Anna Karenina". I tried to read this several years ago and found is so boring I had to give it up. I blame this on a bad translation of the book I was reading. Could you tell me which translation you read? I would like to give it another try.

Yeah! It was the Oxford World Classics edition translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude.
