I don't think it is totally dead. A strawberry is only dead when it gives you a stomachache, it only means that the nutrients that are once in the strawberry are gone. The plant where it came though, it's still alive.

Same way with people, we have relatives, friends who may seem dead physically, but our fond memories of them is what makes them alive.
