Ok, I'm new here but I'm willing to go out on a limb and suggest some old/new favorites.

A Fine Balance, Rohinton Mistry
Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami
White Teeth, Zadie Smith
Cloudsplitter, Russell Banks
Memoirs of a Geisha, Arthur Golden
Blindness, Jose Saramago
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Haruki Murakami
The Shipping News, Annie Proulx
The Savage Detectives, Roberto Bolano

These are just some that come to mind in no particular order.

I've seen the Shipping News around in my local book stores - I've only ever glanced at it. What's its basic plot? [Not that I need anything to read at the moment, but maybe for the future].

Thanks for sharing

I always like book suggestions. The only book on your list that I have read is Memoirs of a Geisha which I loved. I've heard good things about a few of the others so I may just check them out.

I have read The Shipping News, A Fine Balance, Memoirs of a Geisha and Blindness

All are very good books, so I will be tempted to pick up some of your other suggestions. Except I was a little disappointed in Memoirs of a Geisha, but that may have been due to rave reviews by a few friends so my expectations were high.
