Hello from Arlington, Virginia

Unread post

I am new member DickZ. I was on active duty with the US Navy for ten years, and am now a naval architect with a small firm that designs ships in the Washington, DC area. I enjoy reading – mainly novels and history. And I have dabbled in writing – primarily travelogues – but also a few pieces intended to be humorous and entertaining. I am semi-retired, having reduced my work week first to three days a week a couple of years ago, and recently to two days a week.

I am divorced and have four children, along with seven grandchildren. None of my children seem to want more than two of their own, so it is unlikely that the seven will increase any more.

Now that my children are on their own, and I'm not working as much as I used to, I have been able to start collecting Easton Press and Franklin Library leatherbound editions of books, including classic novels, military history, and a few baseball books. I started in January 2010, and so far I’ve gotten 43 leatherbound books, and I will continue collecting these. I read three to six of these a month, as I’ve been buying them a little faster than I can read them so far.

I’ve been a Boston Red Sox fan since 1949, as I grew up in San Antonio, Texas, and the state had no major league teams until after I had left Texas for school and then for the Navy in 1961. Lacking a team of our own, I adopted the Red Sox and have been a faithful follower of them through the years.

I will spend a few days checking out the website here and determining what activities I might like to join. I also want to be careful to learn what limits there are on material that can be posted, so I'll be a lurker for a while.

I’m looking forward to an enjoyable experience with BookTalk.

What a great introduction! I'm going to try to make mine as interesting as yours. Oh wait, I'd have to have something interesting to say first. Darn!

My dad was a Navy man during WWII, by the way. ~Karen

Welcome to BookTalk.org! :)

I'm collecting Easton Press books too, namely the "100 Greatest Books Ever Written" collection. My father left me his partially completed collection when he died a few years ago. I still need about 35 I believe. Wow, are they gorgeous books.

Nice to meet you!

Thanks, Chris, but I can't take credit for thinking of that. I read the suggestion in someone's post a week or so ago, but I can't remember now who it was.
