Update to my previous post: I finally got around to rereading "The Brothers." I was surprised. This time around - many years after reading it the first time - I had a completely different opinion of the book. I didn't like it. I felt the characters were all dysfunctional freaks - except Ivan - whom I couldn't relate to. Also, I felt the main character, Alyosha, was very passive. He was just in a lot of scenes as a bystander.

I'm very disappointed, as I'm looking for novels that have something important to say. I find that so much of today's fiction is much ado about nothing.

Next I'll try Madame Bovary.
