Hi Audrey. Welcome to BookTalk. Yes, I'm a little late in welcoming you. Fortunately, many of our other members are more on the ball.
Some people might think this is foolish, but I've never regretted this approach. I've approached BookTalk with a bit of that attitude too. For the most part I allow the members to select the books. No matter what wins I do my best to read it. The result is a broader education. Books are a tool or maybe even a window into the lives and experiences of other people. So reading something somewhat randomly is like opening a wrapped present and you just don't have a clue what is inside.
One of the books I picked up and read randomly was Thor Heyerdahl's Aku-Aku: The Secret of Easter Island. Doing so was a wonderful experience and I almost feel as if I've actually been to Easter Island.
So where should you start? I suggest you drift along with the current here at BookTalk. Who knows where it will take you.
I agree. My reading interest is diverse. Throughout my life I made it a practice of picking up books and just reading -- throwing out any preconceived notions I might have from looking at the title and cover. My book interests are scattered, but why stay in a single genre when you can enjoy everything?
