Helen Keller: A Life by Dorothy Herrmann is probably the antithesis of the "tortured soul" biography. It is impossible to know where Helen began as an individual and Anne Sullivan ended, so it is hard to know from whom we are receiving a central lesson from there lives that you help neither yourself nor others when you are indulging in self-pity.
