About LOTR.... I can't even get through the movies. They were long and slow. Once again, I apologise if I offend anyone, I know plenty of people who have gone as far as learning Elf...ish? Please don't hurt me, Jlane! Although this forum proves otherwise, Bleach started it!
I've heard War and Peace is overrated... I have to read it for my major and after hearing THAT I'm dreading it. You wouldn't have happened to have read it, would you? (question for all! :] )

What book do you feel has more hype then it should?

Please don't burn me at the stake.Jlane5516 wrote:Genocide and Bleach.... heretics, you need to be burned at the stake. I hated Wuthering Heights too. Catcher in the Rye was a major book when I was younger, it described many emotions that I felt at the time.

You don't like LotR? -grabs torch-
Granted, the series always takes me FOREVER to read, but I feel like it's something I'd read to my kids one day.![Laughing ](https://www.booktalk.org/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Re: What book do you feel has more hype then it should?
I feel that Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series is far more compelling to someone more interested in modern fantasy, like myself, and that its characters are far more deep and driven by desires other than simply greed or pure goodness. No offense to the Tolkien lovers, but those characters are far too flat for me to really relate to. I don't hate them, I just can't find them as exciting as everyone else seems to, and so many other books draw me in and are begging to be read that I just can't waste my time trying to read something that is just not a good fit for me.
But please don't burn me, anyway. We're all entitled to our opinions. Literature is obviously subjective, and we should remember to treat it that way.![Smile :)](https://www.booktalk.org/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Oooor, some are just more patient than others. I didn't get very far in the books. Maybe they get better as you go on? ![Very Happy :D](https://www.booktalk.org/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
I enjoyed HDM- well the Golden Compass. I didn't read the others in the series. :]
So I take it no one's read War and Peace?

I have the HDM books, but I haven't read them yet.
And no need to beg for your life, bleacheden.
LotR is the original fantasy, so it's already legendary~
Plus, fire takes too long.

I have read War and Peace, I rather enjoyed it. I can not seem to make myself like many of the newer fantasy books, Pullman is a fantastic writer but... I do not know something is missing for me. I am not some avid LOTR junkie, I feel that many of the characters are kind of flat, but the world created can not be compared to with the possible exception of the Darkover series.

I love Russian Lit and I think that War and Peace was totally worth the read, in fact I loved it. I am weird, I usually love all books for one reason or another. I hate Hemingways writing style but I appreciate it and still would consider his books some of my favorites. I'm just a lover!
Except when it comes to like, James Patterson and Nora Roberts though, eek!

Do NOT get me started on my dislike for James Patterson...
And thanks for the help guys! I'll read it with positivism in my heart!
