For pleasure, I tend to read "light" classics (or pulp noir). Right now I'm reading The Sun Also Rises by some guy named Hemmingway.

The River Sea: The Amazon by Marshall De Bruhl Has a terrific historical summary for in introduction, followed by chronologically ordered chapters. I am pondering going on a trip with a group this coming January. (If funds permit)
