Well-crafted stories help us understand facts better than just a list of facts. Our brains are hard-wired to understand story more easily than just cold facts.
For example, I just read Heart of Ice by Lis Wiehl. She's a former federal prosecutor and now a legal analyst for Fox News, so she's had experience understanding crime. The villain of the book is a charming, beautiful woman who is a sociopath. By reading the book, you learn a lot about what a sociopath is, how they act, how they manipulate people into helping them to get what they want. While the book is entertaining, it also would help people understand what a sociopath is, and how to avoid getting into a relationship with one. That information might even save someone's life, which would be useful indeed. What's the use of stories? To show us truth.

Fiction allows us to escape into a world of someone's imagination. It's a trip away from reality that if we're lucky is lots of fun.
