proper introduction

Unread post

I've been using this board for months to promote my blog in between work and other activities, and I realized I never really took a chance to browse the rest of the forum or properly introduce myself.

My name is Randy, I'm an avid reader and aspiring writer. I was born in New York and raised on Long Island. My hobbies include reading, writing, exercising and trying to stay fit, going for long walks and bike rides when I find the time, going to the movies and to the beach, and especially watching movies on DVD. I have a massive collection and people that see it think I'm some crazy recluse who sits inside and watches movies 24/7. But I still have a life! Ha ha ha.

My favorite authors are Stephen King, Clive Barker, Hunter S. Thompson, H.P. Lovecraft, Don Winslow, Kurt Vonnegut, and Chuck Palahniuk. I'm not a fan of James Patterson and I find Dean Koontz books to be hit or miss. The only one I really enjoyed was Night Chills, one of his earlier works. Lately I've been reading Joe Hill and anything by Gillian Flynn.

Hi Randy,

Like your infatuation with DVD's I used to have a huge collection of music CD's. But I'm now down to maybe 300 - 400. They've all been ripped and stored electronically. The actual CD's have been sold for an average of $1 each. What a loss!

For years I took great pride in the CD collection as I'm quite the music buff. But CD's are now teetering on the edge of obsolescence and they take up too much physical room, are prone to scratches and broken jewel cases, are a pain in the ass to organize, not to mention inefficient when it comes to locating the CD/song you want when you want it.

I now have about 40,000 songs stored on my hard-drive and will never buy another CD. Good riddens.

Do you watch movies on HBO Go or Netflix? How about Hulu Plus or Amazon.com Prime?

There are better options than storing the actual physical DVD's, but once you have the huge collection it makes sense to keep it. Plus, there is some pleasure in seeing the DVD cases and inserts.

The same goes for eBooks. I use a Kindle but I prefer the feel of a physical book in my hand. Still, I just can't resist the appeal of carrying a Kindle around with over 1,000 books on it.

Oh, and welcome to the community! :-)

Thank you for the warm welcome! To answer your question, I use Netflix to watch movies but I use it primarily for DVDs rentals than I do instant streaming. They recently took a bunch of stuff off there that I liked and I'm thinking about cancelling my streaming account and just sticking with the DVD plan so I can keep up with new movies and still watch the classics.
