Is internet porn ruining our next generation? Is censorship the answer?
These scholars and experts are at the forefront of this research. Apologies but you will have to listen to at least one of these clips to get what this O.P. is all about.

Is it possible that in sexual matters, the right wing conservatives might be ahead of the left wing in their thinking?
If not, then what should the left do to help us save our children from the indoctrination via internet porn into unhealthy and unwanted sexual habits? Or have them not be able to perform without porn?
I consider myself left wing but I think we may be going a tad far and should move to the right on this issue due to things like you saw in the clips above as well as what is shown in this clip below.

At one time, parents would have closed any shop that gave access to the young to porn. Yet today, parents do not seem to care and as more and more young children get cell phones, parental prohibition will be impossible.
Have parents forgotten how to parent and are men and women willing to allow the status quo to ruin the sexuality of the next generation?
"Censorship reflects society's lack of confidence in itself. It is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime." - Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart
To date, I have lived by the above quote. I do not lack confidence in our adult population but see this issue as more of a medical one and I am willing to censure for our children's sake.
Some Eastern countries have used censorship to gain control of what their children can access. Should the West do the same?
Are our children worth it?

It's not possible to censor porn especially on the internet so why ask? (Well unless you put the Chinese Government in charge of all the intertubes!)
Here's a weird question: why is it legal/OK for someone pay Bill and Mary to have sex on camera in order to sell porn videos - they even file tax returns as sex workers - but it is illegal for Bill to pay Mary directly to have sex, that's prostitution?

I would say that it is legal thanks to the porn lobby that has pay governments to keep the laws as they are.LanDroid wrote:It's not possible to censor porn especially on the internet so why ask? (Well unless you put the Chinese Government in charge of all the intertubes!)

Another such quirk is that a shop keeper who sells porn to a minor would be charged yet the net ISP's can sell to minors with impunity.
We have somehow made as golden calf out of one of our tools.
Look at your answer even. You indicate that the net cannot be touched or censored yet we already do with child porn and other things.
I do not see a problem with censoring porn if we decide to do so.

I think it is a good idea to put much tighter limits on what can be displayed on camera. I am a communitarian, not a libertarian, and after teaching school for 20 years it seems plain to me that kids know too much about the voyeuristic mythologies of porn and far too little about the relationship context. If they knew what they don't know, it might be okay. Most kids really are competent to sort out "real life" from the artificial. But the problem is they go in overstimulated on one dimension and don't realize at all what they haven't learned about, talked about, or even thought about.
If Google can find it, the government can find it.

Are you for legalizing prostitution?LanDroid wrote:It's not possible to censor porn especially on the internet so why ask? (Well unless you put the Chinese Government in charge of all the intertubes!)

From your comment, I'd guess yes.

I agree but the anti-censor people think censorship to be a direct attack on their freedoms. They have a what next hysteria.Harry Marks wrote:I think it is a good idea to put much tighter limits on what can be displayed on camera. If Google can find it, the government can find it.
If we cannot overcome that mind set, we will continue to abuse our own children just to please ourselves.
None of this may matter if the science showing how addictive even cell phones are proves itself and the whole system has to be changed.
Texting while sexing just might turn the tide.

No I'm not for legalizing prostitution, mainly pointing out the bizarre disparity on how prostitution and porn are handled by the legal system. Perhaps prostitution should be decriminalized to the point where it doesn't ruin people's lives.
My point on censorship is it's technically impossible to block porn on the 'net. We might try, but even child porn is an example where large rings are busted every few months, i.e. it still goes on. And regular porn is extraordinarily popular.

Censorship would not be particularly easy but it would not be impossible.LanDroid wrote:No I'm not for legalizing prostitution, mainly pointing out the bizarre disparity on how prostitution and porn are handled by the legal system. If it were, then that would mean that we have lost control over our tools and I do not think we are there yet. Tools that are out of control cannot be trusted at all and the governments who control the net would pull it down if they ever thought they had actually lost control of it. Security would demand it.

Interesting links GB.
The internet absolutely reflects who we humans are, It really is unbiased.
As a tool, like any other tool, there will be thorough abuse, It is a shame that that is what happens to a good thing.
I think that if the human race could reasonably censor the ugly uselessness from the internet without degrading the purpose of free expression/freedom, there would be more too credit the human race with than a mere digital communication tool.
Could there be a reboot of the net that would eliminate the down side?
Many people may think, "Sure, go ahead and do it". still wont stop crime though will it? still wont stop dysfunction will it?.
I think that what is odd about the internet is that anything can be put there but woe too whom goes looking, there's a built in trap for nitwits, which may be a good thing, it leaves the easy criminals for the local cops and allows the feds to go after the heinous bastards.

To suggest that we cannot control to a large extent what we put into our library, if I can use that analogy for the net, would be foolish. To say we cannot monitor and control for certain data going in and out is also quite foolish.
If we could not, some hacker would have already thrown a worm into the mix that would be screwing up all date just so he could say he has.
