Question Without An Answer

Unread post

Do you have a question that you believe cannot be answered logically?

I'm still trying to think of at least one good one to share and discuss unless someone beats me to it.

How long is a piece of string?

Haha, nice tries but both of those questions have answers!! I'm still trying to think of a good one but I am very preoccupied this week with more mundane matters. Keep trying, you may not know when you have conceived one that is truly both intelligent and unanswerable though!!

OK, grim, here is an intelligent one, just so you know that I'm not an absolute silly old bugger!!! (Although that fact in itself is 'unprovable'.)

The standard mathematical proof that the square root of two is irrational (ie can't be written as a fraction) is to assume that it can be so written and then prove that this is impossible. The method is called reductio ad absurdum (proof by contradiction) - it relies on proving that something is impossible.

Comments? Anybody? ;-)

How do you know when you've crossed the line between working out to promote positive health, and working out too much where it is having a negative effect on your health?

My students are having a problem with body image and cannot see that line and do not know when they have crossed it....

Your students might know, if they were shown more glamorous models with normal body mass.

Not all of us are meant to look like Barbie Dolls. But, do they believe that? No!! Because the images they see in the media.....of what we call 'beauty' are often emaciated.

I used to point out to my kids that there is nothing 'sexy' about 'healthy and wholesome' and that sexy often meant an element of looking as though you were a fallen angel...a bit debauched.

Extreme measures, I know, but it did seem to work.

Hello....and nice to have you aboard btw. ;-)

It does seem unsettling to see students tear themselves down regarding their "unhealthy" eating habits. Students eat plain salad with lemon and lime juice as their night's dinner. They talk about how they've lost "x" number of pounds and they are almost at their ideal weight, without realizing they are destroying their body.

I will do what I can to help them realize what is "healthy". Even if it is one man/woman at a time.

(...and thanks for the words of welcome)
