The Bottom of the Universe

Unread post

A barren, twisted tree decayed in the back of the dark, snow-covered cemetery away from all the other trees, and a black snake coiled around one of its dying, callous boughs. The old, drunken cemetery-keeper fought his way through the cold wind and approached it. “My ancestor spoke to Eve and tempted her?” the snake facetiously hissed. “Come on, old man . . . the Garden of Eden, the Tree of Good and Evil, apples of paradise, a snake on a bough, Eve had some type of inner dialogue and represented my ancestor as the devil’s advocate and ‘sssuccumbed to its cunning, you’re not that foolish, old man, you don’t believe that, do you? It doesn’t get anymore plausible than that, and that, that’s pretty untenable . . .” Robed in flames, Saint Teresa of Avila appeared on the old man’s side. “The tree that is beside the running water is fresher and gives more fruit,” she said, and then she vanished.
