Good reads about China

Unread post

I'm headed to Beijing next week and like to read good books--fiction and non-fiction--about the places I travel to. Any suggestions for either would be appreciated.

I went to China about 10 years ago - amazing place.

Anyway, I don't know about specific books about the places in China, but I have read Wild Swans, which would be good if you are interested in the Cultural Revolution they had.

Have a good time!

I just read (actually listened to) China Inc. by Ted Fishman. It was well-written, informative, eye-opening, and a little troubling for someone ensconced in the comforts of American suburbia.

If you're into historical fiction, Lisa See has written some really good books:

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (takes place in the 1800's)
Peony in Love (also 1800's I believe)
Shanghai Girls (1937-1957)

These books focus mainly on the culture of women at the time. Lisa See is an amazing author; these books are really moving and powerful, and also give good information about China.
Big bright accent, catty smile
Oscar Wilde confrontation
Ah, live like it's the style.

Shelfari!
